When you tour a cosmetology or beauty school, you should ask questions about hands on training, licensing, costs, and real career preparation. The goal is to make sure the school fits your learning style, schedule, and career goals.
-
Cosmetology students work on dozens of real clients before graduation. Students must complete a required minimum number of real client services in areas like hair cutting, coloring, and styling in order to finish their state board requirements and graduate.
-
Yes. Cosmetology students use real professional products, including hair color and lightener, while working on real clients in the student salon. All services are supervised by licensed instructors to ensure proper technique, safety, and education.
-
The best way to study for the state board exam is to use a mix of hands on practice, in school study support, and online learning tools. At Summit, students have access to multiple learning resources and guided preparation to help them feel confident for both the written and practical portions of the exam.
Students are encouraged to regularly review their state board books, practice services in the clinic, and take advantage of instructor support. Many students also use online practice tests, videos, and study apps to reinforce what they are learning in class.

A common misconception is that cosmetology is easy or only about haircuts. In reality, it requires training, skill, and passing a state board exam. Many also assume cosmetologists cannot earn a good living, but income depends on experience, clientele, and career path.
